About the object

see less see more
The gemsbok has a pale brown back, whereas the head, the flanks and the legs sport black and white markings. Their impressive, straight and pointed horns are highly prized by trophy hunters. Especially prized is a type of Gemsbok with a rare variation in its coat, in which the black colouring is actually lighter. These animals are called "golden Oryx". Cows and bulls are similar in appearance, while cow horns are longer and slimmer. Cows use their horns to protect themselves and their young from attack, while the bulls seek to impress their rivals with theirs. A locking of horns between two male gemsboks is usually a form of display, with minimal risk of injury.
