Alexandra von Berckholtz
Freifrau Offensandt von Berckholtz, 1860
About the object
The artist's widowed sister appears almost head-on and remarkably young at forty-six. In a black dress and fashionable hairstyle against a dark background, her skin, highlighted by jewellery, is a particularly prominent feature. Thirty years later, in order to preserve the patrilineal title which became void upon her husband’s death, she applied for the reinstatement of her noble status.
