About the object

Philipp Merian, a wealthy merchant and philanthropist from Basel, supported numerous foundations in Freiburg, including the orphanage. This portrait of the founder expresses the gratitude of the orphans who had found a home through his beneficence. Merian was made an honorary citizen of the City of Freiburg in 1824.
