About the object
This life-size three-quarter length portrait depicts twenty-year-old Queen Isabella II of Spain wearing a voluminous, ruffled gown adorned with rose petals. In order to secure the Spanish throne, she was declared of age at 13. Winterhalter travelled to Madrid in 1852 to paint a portrait of the Spanish Queen.
