About the object
The portrait shows the sixty-year-old founder of the company M. Welte & Sons in front of one of his mechanical music boxes, which can imitate an entire orchestra. In his left hand he holds a sheet of music for the overture to the opera “Der Freischütz”, in his right hand a hammer with which he loads the pin-studded cylinders with the music.
