Hans Baldung Grien
The Man of Sorrows lamented by Mary and Angels, 1513
About the object
In this instance, Baldung integrates the themes of Mary's lamentation, the Man of Sorrows and his intercession on behalf of sinful humanity into a complex conceptual composition. Dated and monogrammed, the painting (below left) allegedly comes from the Lichtenthal Convent, Baden-Baden. It was made whilst Baldung was working on the high altarpiece of the Freiburg Minster.
