Lukas Kirner
Self-portrait, 1821
About the object
In his time, Lukas Kirner enjoyed the reputation of being the best portrait painter in the Black Forest. The twenty-seven-year-old portrays himself here with pointed sideburns and hair combed onto his forehead with a prominent curl. Two other portraits, of his wife and sister-in-law, are similar in format and were painted in the same year.
