Martyrdom of St Matthew, um 1450

About the object

Matthew had converted a pagan princess and was beheaded for it. John survived torture in a vat of boiling oil. The paintings are from the insides of the wings of an altarpiece, probably featuring depictions of all twelve apostle martyrs. A similar example of the apostle martyrs by Stephan Lochner has survived in Cologne.
