About the object
Peter Dreher was twenty-seven years-old when he painted this self-portrait. Every self-portrait reflects a degree of self-questioning on the part of the artist, as well as an attempt to situate himself. Twenty years later, Peter Dreher revisited the subject in a series of self-portraits in public space, which caused great excitement, but in this instance he is using the self-portrait as a template for painting. By contrast, this early portrait evinces a troubled characteristic style that would seem to reflect the inner turmoil of someone searching for something and correspond to Dreher's age at the time.
