About the object
The layout of the room that Rudolf Großmann depicts in this painting is really difficult to fathom. Or are we even dealing with two rooms? The space seems to be converging into itself, starting from a corner of the room, which is flanked by windows on both walls. The view opens up to the outside and yet is perplexingly blocked at the same time. It takes a moment to grasp the space in its entirety. Is there a person on the balcony? The person's head is partially blocked by the decorative baluster, which has a counterpart in the shape of the vase on the table. The table is set at an angle, the corner of the table meets the corner of the room. But it doesn't quite sit with the wall and is on a different perspectival plane. Once again, the room converges awkwardly into itself, indeed, the viewing angles themselves seem to converge.
