About the object
The spectator is given an intimate view of the room of Anne, mother of Mary, during the postnatal period. She is resting in bed and is handing over her swaddled child, the newborn Maria, to a maid. Another woman is checking the temperature of the bath water in a tub. The panel was probably part of a winged altarpiece depicting scenes from Mary's life.
