The Ulm-based watchmaker and senator, Christian Hainlen, is depicted here aged 50. As the inscription on the back reveals, Moosbrugger and he were on friendly terms. The distinctive pointing gesture of Hainlen's right hand recurs in similar form in other portraits by the painter.
