About the object
Veins stand out vividly on the illuminated forehead, while the hair and clothing are barely distinguishable from the dark background – the portrait is characterised by bold contrasts between light and dark (chiaroscuro). On the back of the painting board someone has noted: allegedly a self-portrait ... The lack of eye contact would be unusual, the gaze directed at a mirror.
