Paten
Paten of the "Schnewlin Chalice", Mitte 14. Jahrhundert
About the object
The inscription and the coat of arms on the round reliefs on the knob of the chalice are a reference to the donor, in this instance the knight and mayor of Freiburg, Johannes Schnewlin, known as Gresser. Shortly before his death in 1347, the founder of the Freiburg Charterhouse gave instructions in his will for two chalices - one of which has survived - to be fashioned from his silver plates and service and donated to the Minster.
