About the object
The pax was an object used in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance for the Kiss of Peace in the Catholic Mass and is still used today: the priest kissed a consecrated panel and handed it to a member of the congregation to kiss. This example features a rock crystal medallion depicting the crucifixion of Christ presented in a silver stand decorated with angel heads. This pax was part of Constance cathedral's Domschatz (cathedral treasure) up until 1827.
