About the object

A pendant with two animal teeth (probably sperm whale). Sperm whale teeth are very rare as they could only be obtained from beached animals or through trade. On some islands in the Pacific, for example Fiji, only political leaders were allowed to possess such teeth. To this day, they serve as valuable, highly-prized, ceremonial gifts at significant social occasions, such as births, marriages and deaths.

Sendung April 1900, SAF D.Sm 35/1): "Zwei Wallroßzähne als Halsschmuck". Die aus Nauru stammenden Objekte der Brandeis-Sammlung wurden allem Anschein nach vom dortigen Bezirkshauptmann Ludwig Kaiser gesammelt (SAF C3/241/1).
