About the object

Pictured in this photograph is the shipwrecked SMS Adler, a German gunboat that succumbed to the wrath of the cyclone in Apia harbour in March 1889. 20 German soldiers from the Adler were killed in this event. After the severe weather event, sailors went aboard to salvage usable materials.
