On the Banks of the Hozugawa River in Arashiyama, Kyoto, 1860 - 1880
About the object
The Hozugawa is a fast-flowing river where visitors could travel on the flat-bottomed boats while enjoying the scenery. In this photograph, two boats of this kind can be seen in the distance, and, in the foreground, we see visitors sitting on benches taking a break. On the bench in the front, we see a side view of a red-belted maiko, an apprentice geisha from Kyoto, who gets to sit on a red cushion.
