Yoshiwara Village by Yokohama, 1880 - 1920
About the object
Yoshiwara was a village on the Tōkaidō Road, the fourteenth of its fifty-three stations. Like other stations, it offered amenities for travellers, such as restaurants, tea houses, brothels and inns. In this photograph, we can see a two-story brothel on the right and a shop selling sweets on the left. Modern gas lanterns have been placed by the roadside.
