The Great Torii Gate of the Itsukushima Shinto Shrine, 1860 - 1880
About the object
The great torii gate marks the entrance to the Itsukushima Shinto Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located on the island of Miyajima, the site has long been considered one of Japan’s three most scenic places, along with Matsushima Bay and the Amanohashidate sandspit. It has been endlessly depicted in the visual culture of Japan, usually with the instantly recognisable ‘floating’ torii gate.
