The Golden Pavilion in Snow, 1860 - 1880

About the object

The Golden Pavilion, here seen from across the adjoining lake, was not only famous for its appearance in snow, but also the way that it is reflected in the water. The pavilion was originally built in 1397 at the behest of the shōgun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu (1358-1408) and stood in its present location for centuries until it was burned down in 1950 by a mentally-disturbed monk. The story is famously described in a novel by Yukio Mishima, entitled Kinkakuji (The Temple of the Golden Pavilion).
