Furō Island in Matsushima, 1860 - 1880
About the object
From a series on the famous Matsushima Bay: Furōzan (literally “Immortal Mountain”) is visible to the centre left of the photograph. Originally an island, a narrow sandbank now connects it with the mainland. From the top of the cliff to the East, one can see all the way to the end of the Matsushima islands, and, to the west, the mountains of the Oshika Peninsula.
