The Row of Jizō Figures at the Kanmangafuchi Abyss, Nikkō, 1860 - 1880
About the object
This scene appears near the Nikkō Tōshōgū Shrine. There presently are 74 stone statues of Jizō, a Buddhist Bodhisattva who cares for children and the deceased. This particular group of Jizō statues is also called Narabi Jizō (Jizō in a line). The statues survey the Daiya River in an area that often flooded, causing damage: there were originally one hundred Jizō figures in this location.
