Woman Carrying a Young Child on her Back, 1860 - 1880

About the object

This was a ubiquitous, familiar sight in pre-modern Japan, as mothers typically carried their babies on their backs while doing work around the house. However, if there were older children (or servants) in the family, it became their role to care for their younger siblings in this way. The baby would be warmly swaddled in blankets and clothing on the back of the wearer and would be tied cross-wise with bands to the front, as in this studio photograph.
