Countryside Road with Resting Porters, 1860 - 1880
About the object
Countryside road with porters resting with their loads. Unlike Europe, where wheeled transport, pulled by oxen or horses, became the norm, in Japan, transportation of goods was undertaken to a surprising degree on foot, partly due to the many rivers and natural barriers. This photograph is one of the few in this exhibition that have been left unpainted.
