Four Musicians, 1880 - 1920
About the object
A group of four female musicians, playing (from left to right) a koto, a flute, a niko and a gekkin. The latter two instruments were Chinese in origin and found their way to Japan in the nineteenth century, where they enjoyed great popularity in the Minshingaku, a school for playing Chinese music on original Chinese instruments.
