About the object

The two children pictured appear to be Sāmoan-European and have been photographed in a studio environment. The number in the top right corner may suggest Alfred James Tattersall as the maker. He shared a studio with fellow photographer John Davis in Matafele, Apia.

The boy is wearing a costume adapted from a sailor outfit with a scarf around his shoulders. He is sitting on a covered plinth holding a wooden soldier figurine in his hands. The girl’s right arm is wrapped around his body to make sure he does not fall off the plinth. She is wearing a dress, stockings, and boots. Their stance suggests that they may be related to one another, either siblings or cousins. Based on other visual material, the two may be Alfred James Tattersall’s children (speculation).
