About the object
This photograph shows the road between Apia and Vailele to the east. Mount Vaea’s distinctive silhouette is visible in the background above the palm tree line. The road was probably constructed for frequent travel between the copra plantation in Vailele owned by the Deutsche Handels - und Plantagengesellschaft (DH&PG) and Apia harbour where copra was loaded onto freight ships and transported overseas. The photograph may have been taken by Alfred James Tattersall who took a similar photograph from a different angle.
