About the object
This photograph shows the Vaisigano bridge over the Vaisigano river mouth with the walled township of Apia in the background. The bridge connected the eastern parts of Apia harbour, such as Matautu, with the more densely populated settlement of Apia. Apia was the central place for commerce and social life in Sāmoa and was originally established by the Sāmoan population. During European occupation, many Western settlers resided and started their businesses there, further expanding the township.
