About the object
Pictured in this photograph is the British consulate in Apia with tents set up on the front lawn. These were used to shelter wounded Sāmoan soldiers from Malietoa Laupepa’s faction during the first bout of civil unrest between 1886 and 1894. British soldiers are gathered by the tent, likely protecting the soil from Tamasese Lealofia’ana and Mata’afa Iosefo’s followers. The photograph has been dated to 1894.
