About the object
This photograph shows buildings owned by the Deutsche Handels - und Plantagengesellschaft (DH & PG) in Apia harbour. The German trading company held a monopoly of plantations in Sāmoa, trading copra and cocoa among other products. The building to the right is the cotton ginning factory that was demolished in 1911 to make space for the casino hotel’s residential quarters. The building in the centre is the main office with a warehouse below, and the two buildings on the left are for storage, the bigger one housing copra.
