About the object
The photograph shows a section of property on one of the plantations owned by the Deutsche Handels - und Plantagengesellschaft (DH &PG), a German trading company that operated in Sāmoa between 1879 and 1914. It predominantly traded and exported copra and cocoa, which it grew in three locations: Vailele, Vaitele, and Mulifanua. In the photograph, a herd of cattle is standing on a dirt road beside a walled palm tree allotment. The herd is supervised by a European worker in colonial uniform and by various Sāmoan personnel. Remnants of copra are visible in the bottom left corner.
