About the object
Pictured in this photograph is a group of German marines, Sāmoan officials, and Sāmoan children beside the remnants of a building. The photograph shows the aftermath of a naval bombardment in Apia following the struggle for the paramount chief title between high chiefs, Mata’afa Iosefo, and Tamasese Lealofi I. The scene was possibly photographed around August 1894 in the second phase of the first civil war.
