About the object

The road pictured in this photograph possibly leads to Robert Louis Stevenson’s house in Vailima. Stevenson (1850 – 1894) was a Scottish poet and novelist who came to Sāmoa in 1889 and was enamoured with the land and its people. He was given the Sāmoan name Tusitala, which translates to storyteller, and was taught how to speak Sāmoan by Sāmoan American chief interpreter, Charles Taylor. He is buried by Mount Vaea. His legacy includes memoirs of Sāmoa and its tumultuous history.
