A Tea Plantation at Harvest Time, 1860 - 1880
About the object
People can be seen plucking tea leaves next to the neatly arranged bushes. In the background there is a temple with a pagoda. In 1859, Japan opened major ports to foreign trade and tea became one of its main export commodities, along with raw silk. This led to tea being planted and harvested across the nation, including land next to temples, as seen in this photograph.
