Countryside Road, 1860 - 1880
About the object
Although Japan had some of the largest urban centres in the world, the countryside comprised mostly uncultivated mountainous areas, where settlements were few and far between. Mountains still occupy over 70% of Japan's landmass, which made transportation and the cultivation of crops difficult. This countryside view shows two groups of travellers walking along a path situated in a valley between overgrown hills next to a lake.
