Crane at Nagoya Castle, 1860 - 1880
About the object
A photograph of the Nagoya Castle, which was built in 1612 on the site of an older medieval castle. It stood in the centre of Nagoya and became a symbol of the city. Tame cranes could often be seen in this and other parks, their wings clipped to prevent them flying away. In East Asia, cranes have long been associated with gardens and paradisial scenes.
