About the object
Dennis Oppenheim investigates artistic processes of transformation in the photographic work made in 1971, enigmatically titled »Toward becoming a Scarecrow«. In a series of 144 photographs, Oppenheim documents his walk through woods and bushes, where he decks himself out with branches and twigs so that he is scarcely recognisable at the end of this process. The two large photos on the left hand side of the picture represent the beginning and the end of the action. The body itself becomes material for art and a symbol for the creative process, for a profound transformation via and within art.
