Farmers Thrashing Rice, 1880 - 1920
About the object
It is harvest time and the men and the women of farming communities come together – as in this photograph – to thrash the harvested rice plants and gather the precious rice kernels. Rice became the currency of the countryside, and harvesting became a matter of life or death for subsistence farmers, who often faced starvation in years of lean harvests.
