About the object
The mountain retreat at Mount Kōya was established in 819 and became a major religious centre that is still vibrant today. It has become one of the most sacred sites in Japan and boasts a remarkable mortuary tradition, as it is filled with hundreds of thousands of graves, rows of majestic trees and a seemingly endless successions of stone lanterns, the latter donated by worshipers.
