Pine Tree with View of Mount Fuji, 1860 - 1900
About the object
In this photograph of Mount Fuji, the colourist has added dramatic colours to the image, embellishing the otherwise romantic scenery. The photographer took the picture from an elevated position, looking down on the lake and the lower hills surrounding the mountain. The photograph is reminiscent of woodblock prints by Hiroshige, who often cropped larger compositional elements – as here with the pine tree – in order to create striking views. The connections between the two media were by no means lost on the savvy photographic studios.
