The Horikiri Iris Garden in Tokyo, 1860 - 1880
About the object
This place was one of the favourite excursion sites in the city when the irises blossomed in June. Visitors would walk around the gardens and then enjoy the view from one of the strategically-placed tea houses. The gardens employed several Japanese women as waitresses; a few can be seen in the photograph. Incongruously, the colourist has added autumn foliage to this early summer scene.
