The Tomb of Tokugawa Ieyasu, 1860 - 1880
About the object
The spiritual centre of the Nikkō Tōshōgū Shrine is formed by the Okumiya-Gohōtō, the grave of the first Tokugawa Shōgun, Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543–1616). A large bronze incense burner, a vase with lotus and a sculpture of a crane standing on a turtle, a combination dating back to pre-Buddhist times, are situated in front of the grave. The surrounding cedar trees are over six hundred years old and were planted at the time the shrine was established. The inscription on the photograph confuses a Shinto shrine with a Buddhist temple.
