Waitress Welcoming a Customer to a Tea Shop, 1860 - 1880

About the object

This young waitress has tied the bottom of her outer kimono to her waist and her sleeves with a ribbon in order to move more freely. She is wearing the tenugui head covering, typically worn in the kitchen. In this staged photo, she has emerged from the kitchen area, separated by a string curtain (noren), and is entering the area where the customers are served: the area to the right is covered with straw matting.
