Hanetsuki was a traditional game played at New Year by young women and children. Japanese visual culture pays close attention to the seasons and as a result, this studio photograph is somewhat incongruous: here we have a combination of a New Year scene, a kimono with autumn leaves and an obi belt with cherry blossom, a spring motif. Most of the Western customers buying the photograph would presumably not have noticed these incongruities.
