This structure is lavishly covered with complex carvings, bright paintings and abundant gold leaf. The gate is about seven metres wide between the pillars, four metres deep and eleven metres high, and is decorated with over five hundred elaborate carvings of dragons, phoenixes, imaginary animals and Chinese sages. The gate been designated a National Treasure by the Japanese government.
