Christian Wentzinger

Selfportrait of the artist, nach 1761

About the object

This self-portrait of Wentzinger adorned the balcony railing of his home opposite the Freiburg Minster. The bust made of lead, which dates back to French models, both in its use of materials and the manner of the depiction, was placed in the spot where otherwise a coat of arms would adorn the balcony railing of large houses. Wentzinger, the son of a humble miller, did not have a coat of arms, so he chose to depict himself as a self-confident artist.
