The Crucifixion with the Virgin and St John, 1634
About the object
The devotional group below the cross, consisting of Mary and John the Apostle, captivates the eye on account of the finely carved drapery inspired by the style of the Late Gothic period. Revisiting the Gothic era was a popular method during the early Baroque employed to re-appropriate vernacular traditions. Zürn belongs to a family of wood carvers, who, starting out from Upper Swabia, disseminated their art into the rural regions of Bavaria and Upper Austria.
