Matthias Faller
The Man of Sorrows with a Putto Angel, um 1770
About the object
Christ as a Man of Sorrows is a symbol of the Eucharist. An angel catches his blood in a cup. Faller reinterprets this late-medieval theme in a rococo style. The light-hearted triumphant gestural language of Christ is alien to the expression of suffering favoured in older times.
