About the object
In terms of composition and expression, the kneeling saint is turning toward the very thing that must remain concealed to the present-day viewer. A successor to the Italian baroque sculptor Alessandro Algardi, to whom the bozzetto is attributed, has translated the pious devotional attitude of prayer into a visual language: his hands folded in prayer and looking away, the overall devotional attitude is also articulated in the dynamic folds of the robe.
